What to Wear for a Headshot and More (Part 2)

In Part 1, we covered the most essential steps to ensure that you’re camera-ready for your headshot session. Now, let’s dive into my five more advanced-level tips that will help you elevate your session from good to exceptional.

The following suggestions will focus on the finer details, ensuring that your confidence, professionalism, and authenticity will be featured.

1. Plan Your Backgrounds and Colors

The background can significantly impact the overall feel of your headshot. Discuss options with your photographer to select backgrounds that:

  • Complement your wardrobe without overwhelming it.

  • Align with your personal or business brand (e.g., sleek and modern, warm and inviting).

  • White is very sterile, the wrong color gray can look dingy or dirty, and black looks great too when lit properly.

Tip: Neutral tones like gray, black, white, navy, or subtle textures are timeless and versatile for professional uses.

2. Your Posture and Body Language

A strong, confident pose communicates authority and trust, while a relaxed posture conveys approachability. The key for most professions is a balance between the two:

  • Practice a natural, upright posture in front of a mirror at home.

  • Avoid stiff shoulders—think relaxed but poised.

Tip: Your photographer will guide you, but having an idea of what works for your body type can make the session run smoother.

3. Choose Accessories Sparingly

Accessories can add personality and bring a polished look to your headshot, but they should enhance the overall image rather than become a distraction. Here’s how to strike the perfect balance:

  • Stick to minimal, timeless pieces like stud earrings or a simple necklace.

  • Avoid flashy or overly trendy items that might feel dated in a year.

Tip: If your personal or professional brand leans towards “bold” or trendy, you should go ahead and incorporate a signature accessory (like a statement watch or necklace) that represents you without overshadowing your face.

4. Bring a Touch-Up Kit

If you don’t have a professional hair & makeup artist or even for a shorter session, having a small kit of essentials can ensure you look polished throughout:

  • A compact mirror for quick checks.

  • Matte powder and brush to keep your face from shining.

  • Lip balm to keep your lips hydrated.

  • A comb or small brush for hair touch-ups.

Tip: Blotting papers can quickly remove any shine on your face, especially under studio lights. Dab, do not wipe. A good photographer will already have all of these things on hand for you.

5. Know Your Angles and Preferences

I would say about 50% of people have a "best side" or angle where they feel most confident. Take some time to:

  • Study past photos of yourself to identify what you like.

  • Communicate these preferences with your photographer—before your Session is best!

Tip: Confidence shows when you feel comfortable, so don’t hesitate to speak up during your session.

Headshot Sessions are not just about capturing your appearance—they’re about capturing your energy. With these additional tips, you’ll step into your session prepared, polished, and ready to create images that leave a lasting impression.
