The Identity Project
Portrait Studies - Volume I
A Study of Identity
The first volume is currently in development for 2026-2027
Model Call
bookings now open
Dates: from August 2026
Location: Tulsa & San Diego
A portrait study exploring identity and the way we see ourselves in black-and-white.
The Identity Project Model Call is an opportunity to take part in “Portrait Studies - Volume I: Notes from a Photography Studio”, an ongoing artistic study exploring identity, beauty, and self-perception.
The regular studio investment for a comparable portrait experience is $3,430 + tax. This limited Model Call is offered at $290 because the resulting work is being created as part of a larger artistic project and publication.
Your Model Call Includes:
Guided Editorial Portrait Session
A carefully directed portrait experience created within the visual language of The Identity Project. The Portraits will be up-close portraits (think waist-up or closer) meant to focus on presence and expression. All Portraits will be in Black and White and photographed in a similar style in the portrait at the top of this page.
Recorded “Identity Interview”
A filmed conversation exploring identity, confidence, beauty, self-perception, and the stories meant to inspire.
Same-Day Image Selection
You'll select your final 9 portraits in the studio immediately following your session. A 10th portrait will be selected by the photographer to potentially be included in a final publication and/or gallery night.
Nine Professionally Retouched Digital Portraits
Nine digital portraits from your session will be professionally retouched and delivered for your personal use.
One Additional Project Portrait
One additional portrait will be selected for consideration as part of The Identity Project. This image will be held from public release until after the initial publication of the project.
Behind-the-Scenes Content
You'll receive BTS content from your experience that you can share on your own social media and archive for legacy.
Opportunity to Purchase Additional Portraits
Additional portraits may be purchased at Heather Broomhall Studio's regular pricing but will not be pushed on you. Single Portrait Pricing for personal usage is $250/image. Upselling Portraits is not my goal here.
Become Part of the Study
Your participation also gives your work the opportunity to become part of something larger.
Selected portraits and interviews may be included in:
Portrait Studies - Volume I: Notes from a Photography Studio
Future books and volumes of The Identity Project
Hopefully a Fine art and Photography Exhibition
Potential Educational Presentations
Editorial Projects
Heather Broomhall Studio publications and marketing
Participation does not guarantee inclusion in a book, exhibition, or other publication. 10th image editorial selections are made by Heather Broomhall.
All participants will review and sign a model release outlining the permitted use of their portraits and interview for future books, exhibitions, educational presentations, and Heather Broomhall Studio publications before participating.
Why $290?
The Identity Project is different from a standard portrait sitting. I am covering most of the costs.
You're receiving the same level of photographic care and professional retouching that goes into my regular studio work, but you're also contributing your time, story, and permission to use the resulting work as part of a larger artistic study.
The regular studio investment for a comparable portrait experience is $3,430 + tax.
Identity Project Model Call: $290
This is a limited opportunity created specifically for the first volume of the project. The first 20 to book will be scheduled and the remaining will go on a waitlist.
What Happens For Your Session?
This Study is designed to happen in one visit.
You'll arrive at the studio in your every day hair and makeup look - or without hair and makeup for a stripped back authentic approach (whichever you feel most comfortable in), we'll create your portraits, record your interview, and select your images together before you leave.
Your nine finished portraits will be professionally retouched and delivered afterwards. The additional “project portrait” will be held for the publication period.
If you'd like additional portraits beyond your included collection, those will be available for purchase at regular studio pricing (and never pushed).
Most importantly, you'll leave having contributed your story to an ongoing body of work about identity and the way we see ourselves.
I will be compiling essays about our Study together which will be compiled into a future book and thoughts on each Study will be journaled on Substack and Socials. This book may or may not surpass the great number of 2 sales (me and my mom) but I am hoping for a local Gallery Exhibition on this Study where you will be invited to opening night and Identity as a whole can inspire more discussions on the topic.
FAQs
-
Keep it simple. This Study is for one look.
I'm looking for fitted black, white, or gray tops, including simple crew necks, fitted tops, or turtlenecks. Select wardrobe pieces are also available in the studio.
The goal is a stripped-back, minimal look that doesn't distract from your presence. Think timeless.
No logos, busy patterns, statement jewelry, or anything that becomes the focus of the portrait.
The Identity Project is intentionally created around one simple, basic look. Keeping the wardrobe consistent allows the focus to remain on you and strengthens the visual language of the larger body of work.
-
Plan for approximately 2 hours in the studio.
This includes your portrait experience, recorded interview, and same-day image selection.
-
No. Hair and makeup are not included in the Model Call. For this Study, I want you to be yourself.
Please arrive camera-ready with whatever level of hair and makeup makes you feel like yourself. The visual direction of the project is intentionally natural, minimal, and stripped back. If you feel confident without hair and makeup then come completely natural!
-
Because this is an ongoing artistic project, every participant must sign a model release before participating.
The release gives Heather Broomhall permission to use the agreed-upon portraits and interview for the Identity Project, including potential books, exhibitions, educational presentations, and studio marketing.
The specific terms and permitted uses will be provided for you to review before your experience. This will be a standard release.
Participants must be 18 years of age or older.
-
That's completely normal.
You don't need to know how to pose or perform for the camera. I'll direct you throughout the entire experience.
You don't have to be photogenic to participate.
You just have to be willing to be seen.
